Defining the terms
Fine hair: Individual strands have a thin diameter — thinner than sewing thread. Can be many strands (high density) or few (low density).
Medium hair: Strands are about the diameter of sewing thread. Most common.
Thick/coarse hair: Strands are thicker than sewing thread, can feel wiry or stiff. Often shiny when moisturized.
Not to be confused with density (how many hairs you have). You can have fine strands in high density (looks full but feels silky) or coarse strands in low density (few but strong).
How to test your thickness
The thread test
Hold a single hair next to a sewing thread:
- Thinner → fine
- Similar → medium
- Thicker → coarse
The roll test
Take one hair, roll it between fingers:
- Can't feel it → fine
- Feel it faintly → medium
- Feel clearly → coarse
Caring for fine hair
Core principles
- Lightweight products only — anything heavy weighs down
- Less is more — use smaller amounts
- Avoid oils and butters at roots
- Frequent washing OK; oil shows faster
Product guide
- Shampoo: Volumizing, lightweight
- Conditioner: Lightweight, skip the scalp
- Leave-in: Spray form, not cream
- Styling: Mousse, light serums; avoid heavy creams
- Treatments: Protein-rich (tiny amounts add body)
Styling tips
- Blow-dry upside down for root lift
- Velcro rollers after drying
- Dry shampoo strategically
- Layered cuts give perceived thickness
What to avoid
- Heavy oils (coconut, castor at root)
- Non-water-soluble silicones
- Cream masks
- Over-conditioning
Caring for thick/coarse hair
Core principles
- Rich products encouraged — thick strands absorb without weight
- Slip is essential — need conditioner to work with strands
- Oils and butters fine on length
- Moisture-heavy routine usually works
Product guide
- Shampoo: Moisturizing, can handle stronger surfactants
- Conditioner: Rich, creamy, full length
- Leave-in: Cream or lotion
- Styling: Heavier creams, butters, smoothing serums
- Treatments: Moisture masks weekly
Styling tips
- Take time to blow-dry properly (coarse hair takes longer)
- Section for ironing or curling
- Oils on dry ends daily
- Cold water final rinse for shine
What to avoid
- Harsh clarifying daily
- Too much protein (can stiffen)
- Stripping sulfates
Medium hair
The easiest — most products work. Focus on other factors (porosity, scalp, damage).
Common mistakes
- Buying "for thick hair" products when you have fine hair — they'll weigh you down
- Using "for fine hair" products on coarse — won't be nourishing enough
- Assuming your hair type from density — "I have lots of hair so I need thick-hair products" is wrong reasoning
Where Mutaly uses this
The Mutaly quiz asks specifically about strand thickness and separates it from density, ensuring products match actual texture not quantity.
