Myth 1: All silicones are bad
Truth: Water-soluble silicones (PEG-modified, Dimethicone Copolyol, Amodimethicone) wash out and don't build up. Non-soluble silicones (plain Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone) can build up if you don't clarify. They're not evil — they just need awareness.
Myth 2: Sulfates cause hair loss
Truth: Sulfates don't make hair fall out. They can dry scalp and strip color. Harsh, but not a hair-loss cause. Many hair loss claims tied to sulfates are marketing.
Myth 3: Coconut oil is the ultimate hair oil
Truth: Coconut oil penetrates low-porosity hair well but sits on top of high-porosity, causing buildup. For seborrheic dermatitis, it feeds Malassezia fungus and worsens symptoms. Best for some, wrong for others.
Myth 4: Trimming makes hair grow faster
Truth: Hair grows at the scalp (about 1.25 cm / 0.5 inch per month). Trimming ends doesn't affect scalp growth. But trimming prevents split-end travel — so over time you retain more length. Different outcome than "growing faster."
Myth 5: Brushing 100 strokes a day is healthy
Truth: Over-brushing causes friction damage, especially on dry hair. 2–3x daily detangle is enough. Brushing wet hair without conditioner causes stretching damage.
Myth 6: "Chemical-free" shampoo exists
Truth: Water is a chemical. Everything is chemicals. "Chemical-free" means nothing. The real question is whether the chemicals are well-studied and safe.
Myth 7: You should shampoo twice each wash
Truth: Sometimes helpful (heavy product days), often unnecessary. Doubles cleansing time and drying effect. Stick to once unless hair is visibly dirty.
Myth 8: Apple cider vinegar is a shampoo replacement
Truth: ACV rinses help with mineral buildup and mildly close cuticle. They don't cleanse sebum or sweat effectively. As a supplement, fine. As replacement, inadequate.
Myth 9: Biotin prevents hair loss
Truth: Biotin only prevents hair loss if you're biotin-deficient (rare). Otherwise, supplementation has no proven benefit. Iron deficiency is far more common cause.
Myth 10: Natural oils can replace heat protectants
Truth: Most oils have lower smoke points than flat iron temps. Coconut oil smokes at 177°C — a flat iron runs at 180–230°C. Oil before heat can actually fry your hair. Use a formulated heat protectant.
Bonus: "Proteins make hair stronger"
Only in moderation. Excess protein causes the opposite — brittleness, breakage.
