Why hair tangles

Tangling happens when:

  • Cuticle is raised (damaged, porous hair)
  • Hair is dry and has no slip
  • Friction is high (cotton pillows, rough towels, tight styles)
  • Hair is long — more strands, more surface area
  • Coily/curly — the structure naturally interlocks
  • Humidity — raises cuticle further

Most tangles aren't a single cause; they're a combination.

Prevention

Seal the cuticle

  • Cool water rinse
  • Leave-in conditioner
  • Light oil on ends

Reduce friction

  • Silk pillowcase (not cotton)
  • Microfiber towel instead of regular towel
  • Loose styles (low ponytail, braid)
  • No rubbing wet hair dry

Stay moisturized

  • Deep condition weekly
  • Daily leave-in
  • Don't over-wash

Detangling by hair type

Straight hair

  • Brush dry with boar-bristle brush, start at ends
  • If wet, use wide-tooth comb

Wavy hair

  • Detangle wet with conditioner in
  • Wide-tooth comb or fingers
  • Don't brush dry unless very loose waves

Curly hair

  • ONLY detangle wet with plenty of conditioner
  • Finger detangle first
  • Then seamless wide-tooth comb
  • Section hair into 4

Coily hair

  • ONLY detangle soaking wet with conditioner
  • Start at ends, work up
  • Take 4–6 sections
  • Spray water + leave-in if drying out during

Emergency detangling

Big knot (not matted)

  1. Saturate the knot with conditioner or oil
  2. Wait 5–10 minutes
  3. Gently separate strands with fingers
  4. Start at the outer edge of the knot
  5. Do NOT pull — loosen first

Matting

Matting is interlocked, felted hair. If reversible:

  1. Saturate with conditioner + olive oil for 30+ minutes
  2. Work with fingers, then seamless comb
  3. Work at the base of the mat, not the tip
  4. If it won't budge, see a professional

If permanent matting: may need to cut.

Tools that help

  • Seamless wide-tooth comb (no seams = no snags)
  • Tangle Teezer (for straight/wavy, some curly)
  • Denman brush (curly detangling with product)
  • Boar bristle brush (straight, redistributes oils)

Tools that hurt

  • Fine-tooth combs on wet or tangled hair
  • Round brushes without conditioning agent
  • Regular brush on dry textured hair
  • Pulling through tangles

If you're constantly getting tangles

Common causes and fixes:

  • Hair feels rough → moisture deficit; weekly mask + leave-in
  • Cotton pillow → switch to silk
  • Tight styles → loosen, change position of tie
  • Very damaged hair → focus on repair; tangles reduce as damage repairs
  • Long hair in bag straps → braid for day, loose at night

Seasonal

  • Winter — static + dryness = more tangles; add humidifier, static spray
  • Summer — sweat + salt + chlorine = tangle magnet; clarify, seal with oil before swim

What Mutaly detects

The Mutaly quiz flags tangling as a signal of moisture deficit or cuticle damage, and adjusts conditioner and leave-in recommendations accordingly.
